Giving Back Through Community Material Reuse

Sharing Resources to Support Local Communities

At Dryad Tree Specialists, giving back is something we care about deeply. We are always looking for meaningful ways to share our resources and expertise with the communities around us. One of our favourite initiatives is offering leftover materials from our tree surgery jobs—whether wood chips, branches, or chunky pieces of timber—to local schools, community groups, Brownie packs, and allotment projects.

Rather than going to waste, these natural by-products are given a second life, inspiring creativity, learning, and connection in places where people gather, play, and grow.

From By-Products to Community Assets

These materials often become the foundation for imaginative, practical projects:

  • Schools – timber for outdoor classrooms, play areas, or craft projects
  • Allotments & community gardens – wood chips for mulch, pathways, or natural features
  • Community groups – resources for team activities and creative projects

By repurposing these resources, we help local groups save money, reduce waste, and engage more deeply with the natural world. Even a small pile of timber can spark ideas, encourage teamwork, and create lasting value for communities.

Spotlight: West Horsley Estate

A particularly inspiring example took place at an estate in West Horsley. After completing a tree surgery job, our team had a generous pile of timber ready for reuse. The estate’s grounds team embraced the opportunity and transformed it into a beautiful garden seating area—a calm, nature-inspired corner where people can pause, reflect, and recharge.

What had once been leftover material became a welcoming green space where residents, visitors, and staff can enjoy a moment of connection with nature. It’s a small act with a big impact, turning what might have been discarded into something meaningful for the community.

  • Encourage environmental responsibility
  • Enhance outdoor spaces in practical, creative ways
  • Reduce waste and make the most of natural by-products

Rather than discarding trees that needed to be removed, the council wanted to repurpose the timber by providing it to local Men’s Sheds groups to craft benches for community parks. Dryad Tree Specialists was proud to support Elmbridge Borough Council in this sustainable project.

A Circular Approach to Urban Forestry

This initiative ensured that the trees removed from the borough continued to serve the community in a new way. By repurposing the timber into benches, the project promoted:

  • Locally sourced materials – Reducing environmental impact
  • Locally made products – Supporting community craftspeople
  • Sustainable reuse – Giving felled trees a second life
  • Community involvement – Bringing people together to create lasting benefits

Our Role in the Project

We processed the felled trees into high-quality planks suitable for bench construction. These planks were then provided to the local Men’s Sheds, where skilled craftspeople transformed them into durable, hand-crafted benches.
